I recently installed the free reference manager Mendeley. The desktop application is great so far with many nice features such as collaboration, a web app, iPad app, and a citation plug-in for Microsoft Word. However, when I tried to install the MS Word plugin on my computer, running a 64-bit Windows 7 Professional operating system and Microsoft Word 2010, the plug-in would not show up in the ribbon under References as “Mendeley Cite-O-Matic”.
I searched the Mendeley support forum and found out that I was not alone having a problem with the automatic installation of the MS Word plug-in from the Tools menu. The solution for me was a slight modification of one of the Mendeley agent’s suggested solutions:
1) Install MS Word plugin from the Tools menu in Mendeley Desktop.
2) Browse to C:\Users\[YourUserProfile]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup
(The path might be slightly different on your machine. Remember also that the AppData folder is hidden. To make this folder visible, click Organize in the window toolbar -> Folder and search options -> View tab -> Hidden files and folders -> Show hidden files, folders, and drives)
3) Copy the file Mendeley-1.7.1.dotm
(Alternatively, you may also find this file in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin folder)
4) Browse to C:\Users\[YourUserProfile]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Autostart
5) Paste the file in the root of the folder.
6) Done!
The solution was to put the global template Mendeley-1.7.1.dotm in the Autostart folder instead of the Startup folder, which seems to be the normal folder for global templates from what I have read.

– links between keywords, clouds of text from the abstracts…
I found http://www.docear.org/ but its idea is more a mindmap model..

no I haven’t come across the type of software you describe. I know Zotero has a timeline feature which is pretty neat, even though that’s not what you’re looking for. Thanks for the tip about Docear, I haven’t heard about it before. I will check it out.

i tried your method above, but i got a ActiveX runtime error 429, when i clicked on the Reference tab in Word 2010. this is how i went about it to resolve it…
on the runtime error dialogue box i clicked “End” and i closed Word
In Mendeley i uninstalled the word plugin from Tools menu.
On my windows explorer i navigated to …
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin
copied the file ….
Mendeley-1.14.dotm
And pasted it on ….
C:\Users\[USERPROFILE]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\AddIns
Note that if you are not on administrative profile, Windows may prompt you for Admin right profile to paste the file.
once done, close the explore window, go Mendeley window, tool and instal Word plugin. in split second it should be done. then open your Word, click Reference and your Mendeley cite-O-matic functionalities should be able to work with no error
My environment is Windows 8.1 64 bit

Came across your post, thanks for your suggestions! My problem was that the language Mendeley is installed in (in my case, Dutch) makes the plugin create a folder in that same language (Dutch). So: I had to rename the folder where the Mendeley .dotm is saved to “Autostart”, and then it worked!

In the beginning, it didn´t work. I ran the found the file Mendeley-1.17.13.dotm and clicked and ran it manually. Then
I realized that I didn´t have the macro file Mendeley-1.17.13.dotm in both the ´startup´ and ´Autostart´ file, so I copied and pasted the file to both folders. I also enabled the macro settings in my anti-virus software. It works eventually!

what i could do if i don’t have the autostart folder??
I’ve tried this suggestion, but it was not work in my computer. I didn’t find the AUTOSTART folder. Finally I tried to install a new release of mendeley desktop from https://desktop-download.mendeley.com/download/Mendeley-Desktop-1.19.5-win32.exe. It worked in my Ms Word 2016.
